Humble Beginnings…

In 2018 after three people died on the streets from exposure, the city approached JCFBN to operate a winter shelter. We had humble beginnings and originally opened a temporary winter shelter out of our LINC office. Over the next five years, our winter shelter moved around the city to various locations. Through this time, we grew a deep compassion for those living on the streets and began to dream of what a permanent shelter might look like.

Countless meetings, brainstorming sessions, and a few years went by. In 2021, a grant was written and approved to begin building a homeless shelter in Madras. We officially opened our doors January 10, 2024, and are now operating a year-round nightly shelter for those who are struggling with homelessness in Jefferson County. The Secure Care Shelter Services Center has become the heart of our organization, because our passion is to help people experience stability, safety and transformation in their lives.

The shelter is open to those experiencing homelessness every night from 6pm-7am. We serve dinner, breakfast, and send people with a sack lunch. For questions and volunteer opportunities, please give us a call.

Our new facility is equipped with a men’s dorm, women and children’s dorm, an assisted care dorm (for our disabled folks), 5 bathrooms, a community room, kitchen, and lockers for storage. This is a safe space for houseless individuals to spend the night and have refuge from the elements. We have a dedicated staff trained to make all people feel welcomed and cared for.
